Category 1: Best Broadband Service Provider
For the third year in a row, ntl:home was the winner with 28% of the votes. Telewest came a close second on 24%, followed by BT Openworld on 20%.
Category 2: Best Interactive Application on Cable
The BBC's Wimbledon service proved most popular on 50%, well ahead of the second-placed Big Brother application, which had 35%.
Category 3: Best Interactive Application on Freeview
As with cable, the BBC's interactive Wimbledon service was the favourite with Freeview viewers on 50%. Free2Play was second on 17%, marginally ahead of the Fame Academy service on 17%.
Category 4: Best Interactive Application on Satellite
Sky News Active pulled off a hat-trick by taking the spoils yet again, no doubt boosted by its expansion to a full-screen service earlier in the year. It had 31% against 23% for Sky Sports Active and 19% for the BBC's interactive news service.
Category 5: Best Channel on Freeview
Having been transformed from BBC Choice at the start of 2003, BBC Three took the title of best Freeview channel, with 39% of the votes from DS readers. ITV2 was second (23%), followed by The Music Factory (11%) and UK History (10%).
Category 6: Best Terrestrial Channel
BBC One was the clear winner yet again on 42% of the vote, but things were much tighter amongst the other terrestrials. As with last year, Channel 4 edged out ITV1 to take second place with 19%, but surprisingly, BBC Two came third on 16%, with ITV1 languishing on 14%. Five lived up to its name by finishing fifth with 9%.
Category 7: Best News Channel
Each year the category of best news channel is a close contest between BBC News 24 and Sky News, and this year was no exception. Ultimately it was News 24 which finished first, taking 48% against the 42% who favoured Sky News. The ITV News Channel came third with 7%.
Category 8: Best New Channel of 2003
UKTV's revamped entertainment station UK G2 took the title with 26% of the votes, despite a strong competition from Sky One spinoff Sky One Mix, which had 21%. Paramount 2 managed a respectable 12%, while Sky's three music channels - Flaunt, The Amp and Scuzz - polled 4%, 8% and 4% respectively.
Category 9: Best Soap
EastEnders continued its dominance of the category for the third successive year, taking a 44% share of the votes. ITV's Coronation Street polled 23%, followed by Aussie import Neighbours on 14% and Channel 4's Hollyoaks on 10%. Emmerdale languished near the bottom with just 3%.
Category 10: Best Soap Storyline
This new category was a close-run race, but ultimately it was the villainous Richard Hillman who helped Coronation Street take the title with the storyline documenting his exposure as a killer. Dirty Den's dramatic return from the dead in EastEnders came second on 37%, while the finale of Brookside managed third with 9%.
Category 11: Best Reality Series
Despite being widely regarded as a lacklustre series this year, Channel 4's Big Brother was the favourite reality series yet again with DS readers, polling 29% of the votes (down from 54% last year). Surprise hit Wife Swap was second on 16%, just ahead of Pop Idol on 15%. The BBC's Fame Academy managed 11%.
Category 12: Best Reality Moment
Big Brother again topped this new category, with 30% choosing Cameron's discovery of his trip to Africa as their best reality moment in 2003. Ruby Wax's performances on Celebrity Fame Academy were second on 25%, while the cast rebellion in I'm A Celebrity was third with 23%.
Category 13: Best Gaming Platform
For the third year in a row the PS2 was your gaming platform of choice, pulling 43% of the votes. The PC was second (29%), followed by the X Box on 17%.
Category 14: Best Radio Station
The BBC's Radio 1 was again first (30%) with Radio 2 following on 12%. Virgin was third on 11%, just ahead of Capital on 9%. 6Music put in a respectable 8%.
Category 15: Best Radio DJ
The self-proclaimed "saviour of Radio 1" Chris Moyles was again champion of this category, commanding 45% of all votes. Terry Wogan was second with 254, ahead of third-placed Chris Tarrant on 12%.
Category 16: Best Film
The second Lord of the Rings film succeeded its predecessor by winning the best film category with 20% of the votes. Disney's Finding Nemo was second on 12% while Love Actually finished third (8%).
Category 17: Best Music Single
With so many potential choices, it was no surprise that this category was yet again a closely fought race. In the end it was The Darkness who finished first with 'I Believe In A Thing Called Love' taking 12% of the votes. Will Young's comeback single 'Leave Right Now' was second, just one vote ahead of The Black Eyed Peas and 'Where is The Love'. Both polled 9%.
Category 18: Best Artist/Band of 2003
Once again it was the Darkness who triumphed in this new category - but by a clear margin, taking 15% overall. Coldplay were second on 6%, with Will Young and Busted tying for third on 4%.
Category 19: Best Programme of 2003
This open category saw a diverse range of entries, but two programmes in particular were nominated time and again. New BBC comedy series Little Britain and US real-time drama 24 both drew 8% of the votes, but at final tally the latter pipped it, ahead by just three votes. The Simpsons held 5%, while EastEnders polled 4% and Big Brother 4%. Some of the more obscure entries included Challenge TV's classic game show Interceptor, Channel 4's defunct breakfast show RI:SE and shopping channel bid-up.tv. Much respect is reserved, however, for the one reader who selected the ever-informative FOX Report with Shepard Smith from the FOX News Channel.
Category 20: Best Channel of 2003
The final category was another open vote but, apart from the channel at the top of the tree, the final standings were somewhat different from last year. Yet again it was BBC One which was your channel of 2003, with 19% of the votes overall. BBC Three was second on 10% - its predecessor, BBC Choice failed to fall in the five last year. Third place went to Channel 4 with 9%, up from fourth last year. Last year's second place and 2001's victor, Sky One, was popular with just 7% of readers this time round; a reflection of the channel's falling viewer share in recent months. Channel 4's E4, which finished third last year, was much further down the ranks - behind the likes of BBC Two and Sky Sports - with 4%.
Digital Spy would like to thank all of its readers for participating in the DS Awards 2003!
