About Us: The Technical Setup

Digital Spy is powered by three core elements: a network of web and database servers based at Telehouse in London's Docklands, its proprietary content management system "RAMS," and forum software provided by Jelsoft Enterprises Limited.

At the heart of Digital Spy's technical setup is the aim to provide a network that can easily be extended and upgraded without disruption to our news and forum services. As time goes on, this goal is becoming more and more achievable. Multiple and fully redundant load balancers distribute public traffic to over ten web servers, each of which in turn connect to multiple, dual-Opteron powered database servers that store and serve news and forum data around the clock. The network is designed such that at times of higher than usual demand, extra servers can, with relative ease, be switched in to serve requests at short notice. Various strategies and solutions are currently being evaluated by the Digital Spy team to further meet the technical imperative of constant availability.

RAMS is an acronym for Remote Article Management System, and it is the mechanism by which all Digital Spy content is created, produced and displayed on the site. Developed entirely in-house, it has been designed from the ground up to serve the specific needs of Digital Spy. The system is continually being extended with new capabilities, and a specially customised version has been developed for DS:BB.

The Digital Spy forums are powered by vBulletin software provided by Jelsoft Enterprises Limited. Following a review of certain technical aspects of the base vBulletin code, Digital Spy has customised certain elements of the software to serve specific technical requirements. This, coupled with the ability of our network to handle short-notice capacity increases, has enabled the Digital Spy forums to serve a large number of simultaneous users during periods of higher than usual demand.
