'Countdown' begins new Vorderman search

Countdown producers have launched a nationwide search for Carol Vorderman's replacement.

Channel 4 is inviting young mathematicians to apply to take over from Vorderman as the arithmetician on the daytime quiz show.

Male and females can apply, but they are expected to have "numeric and literacy skills". TV experience is not necessary, but "charm and charisma" is required.

Shortlisted applicants will be invited to audition in front of Countdown's producers. The closing date for applications is September 19.

Channel 4's Head of Daytime Helen Warner said: "We realise that Carol's shoes are extremely difficult ones to fill, as she has done such an amazing job on Countdown over the past 25 years.

"However, just as we found Carol through an ad in a local paper, we really hope we can do the same again and find another outstanding mathematical mastermind."

Vorderman quit Countdown in July after being told to accept a 90% pay cut or stand down.

The new series airs in January 2009. A replacement for host Des O'Connor will be announced by Channel 4 in "due course".
