The BBC has today revealed details of its programming lineup for this Christmas.
Among the headlines is the return of
The Office, which will air on BBC One in two final episodes, and the final episode in the
Only Fools and Horses trilogy on Christmas Day.
Other comedy specials on BBC One include
My Family, Posh and Becks' Big Impression, Dame Edna - Live At The Palace, Absolutely Fabulous and
French & Saunders.
Also planned is a
Test the Nation end-of-year special, behind-the-scenes documentary
The Story of Absolutely Fabulous, Matthew Bourne's acclaimed production of
The Nutcracker and Michael Parkinson presenting
Christmas Night With The Stars.
An
EastEnders variety show leads the channel's drama highlights; the
EastEnders Christmas Party will feature Liberty X, Lulu, Jo Brand, Suggs, Greg Rusedski and Richard E Grant, with Shane Richie (Alfie Moon) hosting and Mike Reid (Frank Butcher) pulling pints behind the bar.
Film premieres include
Stuart Little, Mulan, Galaxy Quest, What Women Want and
Meet The Parents. Digital viewers will be able to "sing along" with classic movies
The Sound of Music and
Wizard of Oz through interactive.
Over on BBC Two, an "eclectic mix" is promised to provide an "alternative treat for every member of the family."
Celebrity Mastermind will put Shaun Williamson and David Blunkett in the black chair, while other seasonal specials include
Restoration, Dead Ringers, The Kumars and
Doubletake.
An entire night of programming will be dedicated to Bruce Forsyth to mark his pending return to the corporation; included are a documentary on his life, his edition of
Room 101 and "previously unseen footage" from his appearance on
Have I Got News For You.
"This year the BBC has an all-star line up of performances from the world's most talented entertainers," said the BBC's director of television Jana Bennett today.
"Great British comedy, dazzling arts spectaculars, West End musicals and country and soul music legends are just part of a diverse schedule that will provide a Christmas treat for every viewer, their family and their friends."

Well it sounds reasonably good, though i'm not sure about the 'EastEnders Christmas Party'. I'm sure we shall see the usual death and gloom on EastEnders this Christmas.

Having seen these 'Highlights' I'm glad I have Sky and a PS2 :-) Licence fee money well spent...?

As usual its the same BBC tripe aimed at arty fans or Eastenders fans and the same ratings war with ITV rather than taking any risks. I'll be renting some DVDs methinks!!

A respectable lineup that could rival ITV in the ratings - they'd better watch out if last year is anything to go by! And hey - have you noticed how the eqaulity obsessed BBC always seem to have a woman in charge of everything? Typical!

Sounds good, just hope OFAH will be worth the wait!

Blockbusters will be busy this Christmas.

Eastenders, Eastenders, Eastenders, Eastenders, Eastenders, Eastenders, Eastenders, Eastenders, Eastenders, Eastenders, Eastenders, Eastenders, Eastenders, The Office, Eastenders, Eastenders, Eastenders, Eastenders, Eastenders, and more bloody Eastenders. At least they got one thing right!

Ho hum - same old same old.

Is that it? Thank goodness my DVD collection now runs to over 300 discs, is all I can say...

More Only Fools & Horses? Give it up and provide us with something new, fresh and original!

Sound of Music and Wizard of OZ. They MUST be joking. As for Eastenders, they must enjoy losing viewers...

Instead of moaning, you lot could all do something a bit more worthwhile, and spend Christmas away from the television...
R Harris on November 25th, 2003
I thought we'd already had the last ever Only Fools and Horses. How many times are they gonna dig it up. Classic comedy - best leave it as such!
Craig Wood on November 25th, 2003
Usual dross. One day the BBC might be imaginative at Christmas.

Another seasonal offering from the BBC which highlights EastEnders and Only Fools And Horses. How predictable and dull. It's nice to know that licence fee revenue is being spent wisely on special shows featuring numerous EastEnders. Don't they ponce enough off us?

The line up for Christmas films looks good and I have High hopes for the Final Office special but the rest of the line up looks like light Entertainmet over kill. I wish the last two "Only fools and horse" specials had never been made and I'm not expecting much from the last one, They should have left the series where it originally finnished. Christmas is starting to look like the line up for Children in need. Problem is I can't imagen the other channels coming up with anything better or Original.

The Test the Nation series is getting boring now! The novelty has worn off.

Does nothing for me but will keep mother in law quiet for a bit!
Paul on November 25th, 2003
The only programme I am looking forward to is The office's final episodes.
