The BBC is pitting pop against rock with its next TV talent search, according to The Sun today.

Endemol, the company behind Big Brother and Fame Academy, is developing a new show where two bands would be created: one a rock band and the other a pop band. Both would then release singles at the same time to see which one tops the charts.

“Rock has seen its popularity surge, so they are keen to reflect this in a new crop of talent shows," a source told the newspaper. “They have been looking for a way to test rock against pop and they think this is the best idea. Producers have been talking to major broadcasters including the BBC about screening the show next year.???

The report goes on to claim that the series would be a replacement for Fame Academy, which recently concluded its second run.
