The actor said he loved working with Hendriks, who played his character John Paul McQueen's love interest Kieron Hobbs.
Hendriks will bow out of the Channel 4 soap in tonight's episode, with Sutton to follow later this month.
Sutton is quoted as saying: "I really miss working with Jake Hendriks. I love him to bits. We're very close, so I'll still see him.
"A few of us chipped in for his leaving present and bought him an Arsenal football shirt with 'Hobbs' on the back!"
Sutton, 24, added that he is keen to play a villainous role in the future, saying: "Bad boys always have the most exciting storylines. If you look at Rob Kazinsky who plays Sean Slater in EastEnders, there's so much scope for his character.
"He can be as pantomime or as subtle as he wants. I'd love to play a part like that in my next job."
