A "shocking" gay sex scene has been axed from an upcoming episode of ITV soccer drama Footballers Wives.
The four-second scene - dubbed by the Daily Star as the "most explicit sex scene ever to be shown on prime time telly" - showed footie ace Noah Alexander enjoying "frantic" sex with a male prostitute.
The episode would have aired after the 9pm watershed, but there was concern as many youngsters are fans of the show. Family values campaigner Dr Adrian Rogers said: "I despair - there is nothing entertaining about homosexuals having anal sex."
Programme-makers Shed Productions had been adamant that the scene should have gone ahead, pointing out that there had previously been several scenes of heterosexual sex which had gone without complaint.
An ITV spokeswoman said today: "Everyone knows what Footballers' Wives is like. It has been sexually explicit from the very beginning. But we have to be responsible and remain within the bounds of taste and decency as laid down by regulators and what we think the audience wants to watch."
In a poll conducted by the Daily Star yesterday, 82% of voters had
wanted the scene to be removed.
