
The Bourne Identity sequel took $53.5m (£29.1m) over the weekend, knocking Will Smith's I, Robot into number two with $22.1m (£12.0m).
The film, which cost $75m (£40.8m) to make, mark's Matt Damon's biggest opener to date, topping Ocean's 11, which had $38.1m (£20.7m) in 2001. Bourne Identity managed $27m (£14.7m) in 2002.
Halle Berry's Catwoman opened in a disappointing third place with $17.2m (£9.3m). Spider-Man 2 was in fourth with $15m (£8.2m), taking the domestic total to date to a massive $328.5m (£178.5m).
Further down the chart, Michael Moore's controversial documentary Farenheit 9/11 placed seventh with $3m (£1.6m) to total $103.4m (£56.2m), making it the first ever documentary to pass the $100m mark.
