BBC poised to sell 'Dancing' to US

The BBC is close to selling surprise reality hit Strictly Come Dancing to the US, according to C21 today.

A spokesman said that the corporation "is currently in negotiations with a major American network for a US version of the hit series." The network in question is rumoured to be ABC, which has recently enjoyed success with British imports Wife Swap and Supernanny.

Contrary to some reports, Pop Idol creator Simon Fuller is not involved in the deal. "This is a BBC programme format, developed and produced in house by BBC Entertainment and marketed around the world by BBC Worldwide, the commercial consumer arm of the BBC," the spokesman added. "Simon has no rights to the title."

The show has previously been sold to the Seven network in Australia, who are currently planning a second season, as well as state-owned Russian broadcaster RTR.
