The climax of Spielberg's E.T. has been voted the greatest tearjerker in entertainment history.
A poll of over 70,000 people, conducted by Channel Four in conjuction with Kleenex, revealed that the scene in which the alien climbs aboard his vessel, leaving behind a devastated Elliot, as the most popular.
In second and third places were the wrongful execution of John Coffey in The Green Mile, and the death of Leonardo DiCaprio's Jack in Titanic.
