National Geographic has announced plans to launch a high definition version of its TV channel in the US.

NGC HD will launch in 2006 and will be a joint venture of National Geographic Television & Film and Fox Cable Networks, the same partners that operate the standard definition service.

At launch, more than 90% of NGC's programming in primetime will be available in high definition.

"National Geographic has always strived to establish a new standard for the world's most compelling imagery, whether emanating from the bottom of the sea, the most remote rainforest, or -- simply and poignantly -- within everyday life," said Laureen Ong, president of National Geographic Channel.
