'Corrie' named best soap at TV awards

Coronation Street was named best soap at the joint TV Quick and TV Soap Awards.

However, it was not all bad news for opposition EastEnders and Emmerdale, each taking two awards themselves.

Emmerdale's Emma Atkinson (Charity Dingle) won the award for best actress whilst the soap was also given the best soap storyline. Meanwhile, EastEnders' Shane Richie (Alfie Moon) was named best soap actor and Lacey Turner (Stacey Slater) best soap newcomer.

The award for best-loved drama went to ITV's Footballers' Wives, whilst Desperate Housewives received the gong for best new drama.

The other winners were as follows:
  • Best actor - Christopher Eccleston (Doctor Who)

  • Best actress - Julie Walters (Ahead of the Class)

  • Best entertainment show - Strictly Come Dancing

  • Best reality show - I'm A Celebrity...Get Me Out Of Here!

  • Best lifestyle show - The Antiques Roadshow

  • Best factual show - Jamie's School Dinners

  • Best comedy - Vicar of Dibley

  • Best daytime show - The Paul O'Grady Show
