Paramount are planning a series of adaptations of John Carter of Mars, says Variety.

The series of novels by Edgar Rice Borroughs consists of eleven volumes. Paramount have taken on Jon Favreau to direct the first film in what they hope will turn out to be a franchise.

Penned by Ehren Kruger and Mark Protosevich, the movie will tell the story of a Civil War veteran who hides from Apache Indians in a cave, only to find that he has been transported to the planet of Barsoom where he is taken prisoner by a race of tall green men.

Protosevich and Harry Knowles are co-producing.
