From here on in it gets deadly serious.

On live television there can be no hiding place. One iffy performance and it is bus fare home time.

My view on tonight’s efforts:

Addictiv Ladies

Flat
Flat.

Flat, flat, flat, flat, flat.

Flat.

A really dodgy opening to the show and somehow the charisma they displayed in the heats didn’t come across as well on the big night. Maybe nerves played a part but they were frankly dreadful.

Rating:

Shayne

A very confident effort with Right Here Waiting that will do nothing to dent his odds at the bookies.

If he carries on in this vein he’ll be around at the finish.

Rating:

Chico

Oh dear. The nutter has turned up.

A performance that was more Freddie Starr than Rod Stewart. Sadly the joke wore thin long before the song finished.

Sexy? Come on!

We love the ever so slightly deranged in this lovely nation of ours so he was bound to pick up votes.

Rating:

Journey South

A word came to mind halfway through their Elton John cover.

Sadly the word was “Butlins???.

I think they are capable of better; perhaps they need a mentor that doesn’t keep fleeing the country to appear in American Idol.

Rating:

Phillip

I’m not mad keen on either Phillip’s voice or image. I saw little to change my mind on the night.

He wasn’t terrible but he didn’t exactly set the stage alight either.

Rating:

Brenda

Belting through Son of a Preacher Man with total gusto, Brenda gave an excellent effort and easily the most enjoyable act at this stage of the night.

Rating:

The Conway Sisters

It was starting to feel like a bad night for Simon.

An Abba cover may have been the wrong choice though in a way I suppose S.O.S. was appropriate because help was desperately needed.

Simon was refreshingly honest in his comments on his act, though I felt he wasn’t exactly helping their chances by being so.

Rating:

Nicholas

First night nerves seemed to be taking their toll on quite a few tonight and Nicholas was one I’d add to the list.

He wasn’t bang on the money tonight, but I’m sure there’s better to come.

Rating:

Maria

The bride was back and far better than I expected.

The singing was at a more than decent quality and it was a very sexy performance too.

Rating:

4tune

By now Simon was badly in need of a decent showing from his last act of the night.

They sounded a bit nervous to me and choosing a Backstreet Boys song was a massive cliché.

Rating:

Chenai

Well she looked liked a fortune teller and sounded like a karaoke singer.

I felt it was a poor choice of song (for her voice) and it didn’t work for me.

Rating:

Andy

Andy was my favourite going into the live shows but somehow it didn’t seem to come off tonight.

He may have a marvellous voice but he moved around the stage like, well, a binman.

Better to come from him I feel.

Worst on the Night: Addictiv Ladies

The Showdown

Viewer voting has proved to be very unpredictable. It might be easier to second guess if we were voting for the act we wanted ousted. While we’re voting for our favourites and while there are so many acts left, it’s highly probable that a decent act will bite the dust early on in the run.

Having said that it’s hard to argue that the bottom two acts didn’t deserve their fate this week while it has to be said that The Conway Sisters can consider themselves fortunate to stay in.

The sing off gave Addictiv Ladies a chance to redeem themselves for the awful opening to the show. Unfortunately they remained flatter than Norfolk.

As for Chico, he continued to play the buffoon and who can blame him, that’s how he got in after all. You can’t say it’s dull when he’s about.

Louis was forced to make the decision and in the end, on the night’s performances, he got it right.

Simon took a big gamble on the ladies and it’s a pity it didn’t pay off.

More next week.
