The station is the first from a third-party broadcaster to join the HD lineup. Previously announced channels include HD versions of Artsworld and Sky One, two Sky Movies screens, one Sky Sports channel and one Sky Box Office channel.
National Geographic HD intends to offer "innovative factual programming produced in the UK and around the world, covering natural history, wildlife, science and world exploration." Shows such as Oceans of Glass, Earth Shock: Volcano and Megastructures with Dolby Digital 5.1 surround sound.
"The clarity and vibrancy of HD is a perfect match for a National Geographic channel," said Brian Sullivan, Sky's director of customer products and services. "Watching wildlife programmes in HD will transport you around the world and take you up close to some of nature's most amazing creatures in more detail than ever before. We are excited to be able to bring customers such an outstanding addition to our HD channel line-up."
George Jeffrey, MD of National Geographic Channel Europe, added: "National Geographic Channel is a smart, contemporary channel and high definition provides the perfect environment to showcase our quality, factual TV offering to our growing audience."
Meanwhile, Sky has confirmed that it is in "discussions" with a number of other broadcasters over potential HD services and plans to announce further details "over the coming months".
