Tom Hanks has helped to produce a video to help potential winners at Sunday's Academy Awards to get through the ceremony safely.

The video, which lasts around eight-and-a-half minutes, aims to make the event a night to remember, but also one with few overly-long speeches from the winners, The AP reports.

Featured on the video, which will accompany each nominee's invitation and letter of congratulations, are a collection of some examples of how to and how not to go about accepting awards. Clips used to illustrate the points include footage from the likes of an excited Julia Roberts, a weeping Gwyneth Paltrow and a speechless Robin Williams.

Advice has been given in previous years at the annual Oscar nominees' luncheon, but it has now been decided that this video is a more fool-proof way for the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences getting their messages across, as not all nominees would attend the luncheon.

The top tips given by the two-time winner, dispensed sitting in the deserted Kodak Theatre, the ceremony venue, include "lose the list" and to avoid thanking too many people for their part in the honour.

Overall, Hanks suggests: "You've devoted your passion and your dreams to the entertainment industry, so use a little of that Oscar-winning creativity to make your speech entertaining."
