For a long time now, phone manufacturers have failed to come up with a phone which, in my opinion, was 'just right'. Sony Ericsson were (and still are) guilty of this. Take their T610 for instance. Great ringtones, good features, the right size but badly let down by the terrible quality pictures from the camera, plus the processor was too slow, meaning that when you text someone, if you were doing it too fast, the phone would have trouble keeping up with you. Nokia have always excelled when it comes to these features and with the 6230 they have come closest yet to what I'd call a phone being "just right". The first thing you notice about this phone is it's not the best looking phone on the market. Roughly about the same dimensions as the 7250i (my previous phone) it doesn't appear to be aimed at the style-conscious market. No, this is primarily a businessman's phone, a trait of the 6xxx series. Still there is a lot in this phone to keep just about everyone happy. I was attracted to this phone initially as I was after an mp3 player. I'd seen 1Gb MMC cards for £80 so instead of paying upwards of £150 for a Mini Ipod, I wanted to take this cheaper and easier route. I've done this and now can store around 500 songs on the phone. With the PC Suite software you simply drag and drop mp3 tracks from your computer to the phone, simple as that. The sound quality is excellent, can't fault it there. There's a graphics equaliser too but I haven't found that to make much difference. You can even set one of your mp3s as a ringtone. Failing that, if you're not a fan of ringtones, you can set it to have a standard "ring ring" tone. The screen has 65,000 colours and is a big step up from the 7250i which was pretty good in itself. The camera is the usual good quality too. Something of a standard with new Nokia phones now, you can record video clips of up to 4 minutes but be warned, don't expect to compare the quality with that of a normal camcorder. The picture is a bit blocky, especially with fast moving images but if you just want to record a drunken laugh with your mates, it's perfect. One thing which takes a bit of getting used to is the d-pad. Previous Nokia phones had the 'select' button as the top left-hand key, so for a while you'll want to choose an option by pressing that key and nothing will happen. With this phone, you select options by pressing the d-pad. Also the top right button can be pre-selected to be a shortcut to the radio, WAP, etc or whatever you want. The keys are all flush with each other and there's nothing to separate them. Some people have said this causes them problems when texting but I go through about 100 texts a week and have no trouble at all. Summing up, this is one of the best phones available for my needs. The bluetooth works well as expected, the caller volume is up to Nokia's usual high standards, the battery life is also very good and the reception cannot be complained about.

Only my third cellphone but easily the best. I wanted another Nokia even though my old one went mental and kept forgetting the time, ringing home etc etc. A key factor was the SD card - fine in principle but not perfect. This is because you have to take the back off, remove the battery and then extract the SDC. I then pop it into the computer to change files etc. Then you put it back in etc and have to reset the date and time. Fiddly but I expect it to get better when I get Bluetooth and USB sorted out. It accepted a 1Gb card but you have to use the thinner ones as my camera one did not fit. It plays most of my MP3s - but it seems some files are dependent on the length of the filename. You can also have fun making your own 3gp format movies, etc. with the right software - I bought a DVD of goodies off EBay. Amazing to be able to watch a movie on your phone but spoiled by not being able to double speed back to where you left off watching the 3 hour epic. Better to get clips off YouTube and convert them via flv using KeepVid. All round a great phone but if you get one off Ebay make sure it is unlocked as it will cost you another fiver to unlock (I used Greenlight Hypermarket).

Excellent phone - easy to use, loads of features, small size, stylish looks. This phone is the best all rounder I've seen.
