After being invited onto the stage with U2 at their concert in New York in 2005, Mary J Blige performed One, resulting in a standing ovation reception for the collaborators. Soon after, this track was recorded with Mary J taking the lead vocals and Bono supplying additional vocals and the band playing the main track.

Goodness, it sure does make a difference working with an original artist on a cover. This track is simultaneously just like and completely different from the original 1992 hit. Mary J's vocals are incredibly refreshing and she makes the song completely her own without changing the feel.

As far as Mary J Blige goes, this is a woman who has some serious vocal talent. A strong diva-like voice is balanced by true sensitivity to the flow of the music. Any embellishments used serve to highlight the tune, rather than distracting from it as less controlled voiced could so easily do.

U2 support Mary J as an artist in her own right superbly, even if in parts the balance might be slightly off, as if they are too used to balancing with Bono and need to find the levels. Any slight slips are swiftly corrected however, and it certainly doesn't detract from the overall feel of the track.

A superb addition to the original, this track is anthemic and sung from the heart, and will lift the spirits of anyone that enjoys this kind of soulful singing.
