BBC One leads Friday night laughs

BBC One enjoyed a strong ratings performance last night (Friday) with its reworked comedy lineup.

Although the channel steadily lost viewers as the night wore on, it still kept ahead of all of its rivals. My Family kicked off the block with 6.49 million viewers, a 29.8% audience share, at 8.30pm, before Have I Got News For You returned to 5.69m (25.3%). The Smith & Jones sketchbook premiered with 4.28m (20.3%) at 9.30pm.

ITV1 drew a respectable 4.76m (21.5%) for the celebratory documentary The Girl Who Would Be Queen between 8.30pm and 9.30pm, although viewers were less interested in The Unforgettable Eric Morecambe (3.29m, 16.1%) an hour later.

BBC Two managed to take most of the spoils with a largely humourless lineup, beginning in the 8pm hour with 2.94m (13.8%) for Gardeners' World against Tiger Attack (0.82m, 3.8%) on Five and a Will & Grace double (0.78m, 3.7%) on C4. At 9, The Mystery of the Headless Romans appealed to 2.37m (10.7%), although Green Wing had a decent enough 1.6m (7.4%) for C4. Five's docu The 1970s: That Was The Decade That Was had 1.09m (5%) for last place.

Coronation Street (9.39m, 49.3%) was first for the day overall, just edging ahead of EastEnders (9.18m, 44.1%). Emmerdale took its usual third with 7.1m (41.1%).

ITV2 had a strong night in multichannel homes, led by 560,000 for the latest American Idol. E4's Supernanny repeat had a sizeable 337,000 at 9pm, with an extra 130,000 via timeshift, ahead of Friday night movie Ghostbusters 2 (246,000 + 81,000).

BBC Three began with 173,000 for The Real Hustle, peaking with 454,000 for a Doctor Who repeat at 9.
