Doctor Who has won five Bafta Cymru awards after being shortlisted for fourteen.

The drama, scripted by Queer As Folk's Russell T Davies, won prizes for costume, make-up and photography direction, as well as for best drama director and best drama series. Davies also won a special award for his contribution to network television, says BBC News Online.

BBC Wales' Clare Hudson explained: "We are thrilled that the spectacular contribution made by Russell T Davies to television over the past few years has won him such a very special award."

Doctor Who, which has just begun its second series with Casanova star David Tennant in the lead role, has also been nominated for a national Bafta for best drama.

The national Baftas will be held in London on May 7.
