After the repetitive, sounds-like-too-many-previous-tracks debacle that was the Chilis' last single release, it is something of a relief to listen to a track from this highly talented band that doesn't have the word 'California' slap bang in the title.

'Tell Me Baby' is as accomplished as anything this band have previously produced - the group are insanely lucky to have Anthony Kiedis' emotive, husky, sexual vocal lifting the track. The gentle guitar beats at the start of the track soon give way to a typical Chili beat, and it's not till partway into the song that the melody really kicks in, bringing some great guitar solos along with it.

Die hard Chilis fans will probably love this, whilst newbies will find it funky and original enough for their tastes. But this is textbook stuff, and it does imply they're not really trying hard enough to come up with something truly fresh. It's debatable as to whether this is acceptable, but realistically, why should an immensely successful, veteran band have to rework their choices every few years just to please fans - why shouldn't they stick with what they enjoy? 'Tell Me Baby' seems to be a prime example of this decision-making.

In the end, 'Tell Me Baby' is, fortunately or unfortunately, much more Californication than Blood Sugar Sex Magic, but it's still enjoyable enough, and will likely rocket up the charts like nobody's business.
