Since entering the resort, the model has been suffering from terrible mood swings and is struggling with her unrequited feelings for Boyzone star Shane Lynch.
A friend told The Mirror, "Sophie's doctor is alarmed by her fragile state. He's advised the producers of his professional concern that she's on the brink of a breakdown and should be taken off for her own good."
Anderton visited the Priory clinic before joining the show for an assessment of whether she was mentally fit enough to cope with the pressures of a reality series.
"Their advice was a firm no," Sophie's pal added. "They thought such a high profile show would put her under too much strain, but she decided to go ahead anyway. And now she's making a fool of herself on national television.
"She has fallen hard for Shane and is struggling to cope with his rejection. It's fair to say the producers are concerned about her but she is there of her own free will. They've been speaking to her doctor, but feel she can cope."
An ITV spokesperson insisted, "Sophie is fine. She wants to stay in the show as long as possible. If our contestants have any concerns, a dedicated psychiatrist is available at all times."
Anderton's spokesperson confirmed, "Her doctor did call ITV and asked for Sophie to be seen by a doctor out there because he was so worried about her."
