The Context
Willow had just rekindled her romance with fellow witch Tara, after they split up over the former's dangerous addiction to magic. Meanwhile, Sunnydale has been overrun by the villainous antics of a nerdish triumvirate - Andrew, Jonathan and their leader Warren, who was furious after Buffy destroyed the Orbs he used to gain special superpowers. Warren used a jet pack to escape from the Slayer after a violent confrontation, but he returned with vengeance on his mind.
The Moment
Warren arrives in Buffy's garden armed with a gun and shoots her once because of her previous actions. As he leaves, Warren randomly fires a parting shot into the air. The bullet flies through an adjacent window and through the heart of Tara, who instantly falls to the floor. As Xander fights to revive Buffy, Willow cradles Tara in her arms and become hysterical. Tara can only utter "your shirt" - a reference to the blood stain on Willow's top - before she passes away.
The Aftermath
A distraught Willow immediately used her powers to speak to the God Osiris in a bid to restore life to Tara. He rejected her pleas, stating that Tara's death cannot be undone as it resulted from natural human actions. The death of her lover certainly brought out the darkness in Willow, as her desire for revenge saw her deploy her Wiccan powers to their full. Seemingly determined to destroy the world, Willow tracked down Warren and literally skinned him alive. On the plus side, Buffy survived Warren's attack after Willow ventured to the hospital and removed the bullet from her chest using her powers.
