The episode, in which Steven Beale attempted to kill Pat Butcher, picked up 6.1m (33%) over half an hour from 7.30pm.
The instalment on Tuesday last week was watched by 8.9m (39%), when ITV1 was airing Champions League football in the same slot.
Last night, the channel attracted 5.8m (33%) for an hour-long Emmerdale at 7pm, falling just behind its BBC One rival.
BBC One kept the lead later, too. At 9pm Waking The Dead was watched by 6.1m (27.2%) while ITV1 documentary Too Fat To Toddle could only interest 3.7m (16.4%).
On Five, CSI: Crime Scene Investigation notched up 2.3m (10.4%) and Channel 4's Grand Designs Live - which is running through the week - drew 1.8m (8.2%).
On BBC Two the final episode of documentary series Age of Terror picked up 1m (4.5%).
