New 'Underbelly' to be aired after ban lift

Underbelly
An uncensored version of Underbelly is due to be released.

The Australian TV drama, which was aired in 2008, was heavily edited in the state of Victoria because of a court ban that prevented the crime history of "flamboyant" underworld character Tony Mokbel being revealed.

The Nine Network reportedly now wants to show the unedited version in the state, with a source saying: "We are looking at it seriously."

Robert Mammone, who played Mokbel, said that Screentime may even ask him to reprise his role in an expanded story about the character and said that he would love to be involved. He told the Herald Sun: "Tony's involvement [in the story] was huge and we couldn't tell that story [before]."

Mammone, who also plays Sid Walker in Home and Away, said that while researching the role, Victorian police described Mokbel as the "life of the party", adding: "I understood him to be flamboyant but loyal to his family and inner circle."

The cast of the fourth Underbelly series recently started filming in Sydney. Oscar-nominated actress Jacki Weaver was rumoured to be taking part, but the show's producers said that they "can't afford her".
