The Australian comedian, who is best known for his series Summer Heights High, said that he doesn't care if he shocks people when he pushes "the boundaries" with latest show Angry Boys.
Lilley recently hit back at rumours of racist slurs over new character, youth detention centre worker Ruth "Gran" Sims, saying that he is just trying to be "funny" and please his fans.
He told National Features: "Mostly when I'm pushing the boundaries and seemingly provoking people, it's more about me just wanting to do something to surprise people and do something interesting.
"It's a rare thing, to have the opportunity to make a show, so why not do something that's different and I like entertainment that's a bit provocative and a bit shocking.
"I can't worry about [being criticised]. I'm not trying to be smart and make some kind of statement. I'm excited by the idea of playing a 65-year-old woman who works in prison and want to make that as real as possible. She really loves those boys. She is totally unaware of how politically incorrect it is. She sees that she's getting through to them."
Angry Boys premieres in Australia on May 11 on ABC1.
