The musician is the son of record producer and Motown founder Berry Gordy and admitted to Metro that he met many of the label's stars when he was growing up.
Redfoo said: "Yeah but they were tamed and a little more mature by the time I met them.
"I saw the respectful, calm side of people like Smokey Robinson, The Temptations, even Rick James put out the doobie when he came around."
Asked about his inspirations, he added: "Rick James, Michael Jackson, my brother Rockwell, Eddie Murphy's song 'Party All The Time'.
"My mom made the first Rick James videos and I'd go to the sets. He'd have fireworks and flashy suits at his concerts.
"He dressed in high-heeled boots, glitter all over, being a funk master. Seeing that when you're 5 changes your perspective on what's normal."
Quizzed on the future goals of the 'Champagne Showers' group, Redfoo said: "To stay on top like the Apple company.
"That's become a new challenge. It's a way of life. We want to stay consistent - that doesn't sound like a sexy goal - but then we want to do everything a kid would want to do; like make movies, do greater Vegas-style shows."
