The Australian broadcaster and host of A Current Affair lost her 77-year-old mother Barbara to cancer four weeks ago and has been off work since. She also took time off her TV show during the year when she was caring for her mum.
Grimshaw told the Sunday Herald Sun: "We are absolutely bereft at the loss of mum. She fought her illness with grace and stoicism, and if anyone deserved a victory it was her.
"I'm so grateful to friends and family for their love, and also to my friends at Nine."
A Current Affair's executive producer Grant Williams said: "Trace has had a terribly tough year, spending countless hours by her mother's side as Barbara fought the cancer. Their bond wasn't only that of a mother and daughter, they were best friends."
He added that it feels "great to have the best TV interviewer in the country back in the chair" again.
Earlier this year, Grimshaw celebrated 30 years on television, having previously said that she doesn't regret choosing her career over having marriage and children.
