Bikie Wars: Brothers in Arms - based on the story of Australia's 1984 Milperra massacre between Sydney's most notorious motorcycle gangs - recently started filming. Seven people died in the incident.
According to The Sunday Telegraph, Hayes will take a lead role in the six-part drama alongside former Home and Away actor Callan Mulvey and Underbelly star Damian Walshe-Howling.
Earlier this year, Ten's chief of programming David Mott said of Bikie Wars: "This event mini-series will shine a light on this fascinating tribal culture and its code of honour - as intriguing now as it was when the word Milperra became synonymous with one of our blackest days."
Producer Des Monaghan added: "[This is a] remarkable story. The Milperra massacre is a unique moment in our history and in many ways marks a time when the culture of bikie gangs began a period of fundamental change."
In The Slap, Hayes plays the father of a young boy who is hit by another child's dad at a barbecue. The show has been a success in Australian viewer ratings and is currently airing on BBC Four in the UK.
