The premiere of this year's MasterChef Australia is poised to go head-to-head with live coverage of the Logie Awards.

The Channel Ten cooking reality show, which is judged by Matt Preston, Gary Mehigan and George Calombaris, is scheduled to return for its third series on May 1, the same day that the Australian TV awards event is held.

According to The Daily Telegraph, MasterChef will kick off at 7.30pm and run for 90 minutes, crossing over significantly with the red carpet arrivals and start of the presentations of the Logies.

Last year's launch episode of MasterChef averaged at a record 1.692 million viewers, while the Logies got an audience of 1.4 million.

In February this year, Ten signed a new contract to enable them to retain all rights to the MasterChef format.

It was recently announced that this year's host of the Logie Awards would be actor and comedy star Shane Bourne, who is best known for his roles in City Homicide, Thank God You're Here and Hey Hey It's Saturday.
