The former Spice Girl, who recently announced that she is pregnant with her third child, is believed to have been asked to join Ronan Keating, Guy Sebastian and possible judge Natalie Bassingthwaighte on the reality television series.
According to The Daily Telegraph, the Seven Network is expected to make the announcement within the next few days.
Mel B sparked rumours when she asked UK X Factor judge Dannii Minogue for her "help" with "something" but did not reveal any more details.
Earlier this year, former judge Kyle Sandilands announced that he would not be returning for the 2011 season. He said: "I thought the show was great and it was great fun to do but it's just too hectic, it's too much. Thank you so much for the great opportunity but I'm not doing it."
After Sandilands dropped out, Natalie Imbruglia said that she no longer wanted to take part. The two remaining judges are singers Keating and Sebastian.
Former Neighbours actress and Rogue Traders singer Bassingthwaighte was first linked to the programme last month.
