Bubble was a just a few kernels short of beating the world sweet corn eating record in the Guinness World Records test.
The group gathered around the dining table as Bubble attempted to scoff down the 169 kernels in just three minutes. Three attempts brought him close, but not quite close enough, as his nerves got the better of him.
Bubble had psyched himself up, flattening the kernels with the flat of his cocktail stick before launching into the task. After a few deep breaths and a couple of snorts to clear his passages, Bubble was ready to get stuck in.
As the whistle was blown, the tension in the room was only humoured by the sound of sweet corn being sucked off a toothpick. After a confident start, Bubble fell apart, losing vital seconds to change cocktail sticks and taking several seconds to pluck each kernel in turn.
When the final whistle was blown and Big Brother announced that Bubble had 20 minutes to prepare for his second attempt, the group shook their heads in dismay.
"You were shaking, Bubble," Helen announced, to her disappointed housemate.
"If I can't do it the first time, I've not done it," Bubble said tersely.
"Relax. That's what it's all about. You're just warming up mate," Dean reassured him.
"I'm picking up sweet corn with a toothpick. Why is that so nerve-wracking?" he exclaimed in frustration.
But Bubble's anguish wasn't relieved on either of his following attempts. When he completed the third round, he threw down his toothpick in despair.
"That was a good game, mate. A good effort," Dean said. Though Bubble won't find his name in the Guinness Book of Records alongside Dean and his all-conquering sugar tower, at least Dean's success means they'll have enough money to buy whatever food they want. Just don't mention sweetcorn.
Big Brother 2 is a Bazal production for Channel 4.
