Riteish Sidhwani will co-produce the picture, while Abhishek Kapoor has been lined up to star in the English-language project, reports the Times Of India.
Akhtar announced the movie's latest developments on his Twitter, where he also speculated over the price paid for the script.
"I don't know about highest [price] paid...but it's a very good script that we are producing," he said.
The producer also quashed rumours that he would appear in the film.
He added: "I will not be acting in it."
