Ranaut will play a journalist in the film, which contrary to recent rumours is a thriller rather than a biopic of Bachchan.
A source told the Mumbai Mirror: "Pritish [Nandy, the film's producer] has interacted with Kangna on a couple of occasions. He and Kushan think that she is a gifted actress."
Ranaut is currently shooting Telugu film Ek Niranjan in Switzerland.
She is expected to begin filming Actor in Mumbai and Europe early next year.
