The pair were introduced after Bhagat initially pitched his book to Indian director and actor Farhan Akhtar.
He told Bollywood Hungama: "I was looking for a potential filmmaker to whom I could entrust the job of adapting my third book The 3 Mistakes Of My Life on to celluloid.
"I happened to meet Farhan a couple of times and spoke to him about working together. He just casually mentioned that Abhishek Kapoor was looking for a suitable script and that's when things started rolling."
Bhagat's two other novels have also been adapted by Bollywood, with Salman Khan starring in Hello and Aamir Khan scheduled to appear in 3 Idiots later this year.
