The duo last shared the screen in Mehta's 1998 film Fire, in which they played a lesbian couple.
Mehta's take on Salman Rushdie's 1981 novel will also feature Seema Biswas, who previously worked with the director on Water.
The 59-year-old told IANS: "These are my three absolute favourites. Enchanting enduring actors whom I've had the privilege of working with earlier. And Seema was absolutely resplendent in Water."
Mehta will begin shooting Midnight's Children in 2010 after she has wrapped up Akshay Kumar starrer Komagata Maru.
