Director Priyadarshan has criticised Indian authorities for sending "idiotic films" to the Oscars.
Priyadarshan, whose Kanjeevaram recently picked up a National Award, argued that many "great filmmakers" had been overlooked in the past for no good reason.
He told NDTV: "We are making a mockery of ourselves by sending such idiotic films to the Oscars. When we had such great filmmakers like Ray (Satyajit Ray) and Adoor Gopalakrishnan, none of their films were ever sent to the Oscars.
"This is very sad. We have great filmmakers but none of their films are sent to the Oscars, why?"
Priyadarshan's De Dana Dan, which stars Akshay Kumar and Katrina Kaif, is scheduled for release on November 27.
