The actress is playing a politician modelled on Sonia Gandhi in the political thriller co-starring Ranbir Kapoor.
According to the Mumbai Mirror, helmer Prakash Jha has turned down her request.
A source told the newspaper: "Katrina clearly doesn't want to give up on her image as a commercial actress and wants to feature in the song, as after the initial few scenes in Rajneeti, she goes completely deglam.
"Getting to dance to this masala number was perhaps her way of ensuring that her sexy image remains intact. But knowing Jha he will get some other actress for the item song."
Jha confirmed the news: "Yes, we have a club song which Katrina is extremely keen to do. But, I have yet to decide on several aspects of the song. Ranbir is definitely not part of the song and I will soon finalise who will feature in the number."
Most Bollywood films feature one item number, an upbeat song-and-dance sequence usually unrelated to the plot. It is normally performed by an actress who is not a character in the film.
