According to BBC Asian Network, the film, which stars Shah Rukh Khan, has been linked to a good deal of controversy because of the actor's comments about Pakistani cricketers being allowed to play in the Indian Premier League.
However, it has already reportedly grossed more than £936,000 since hitting screens and has entered the UK Box Office charts at number six.
Khan's wife Gauri, who produced the film, denied that My Name is Khan's popularity had anything to do with the controversy surrounding it.
"People have liked the movie which we're really happy to see and it's not because of the controversy," she said.
The previous record for a Bollywood film in its opening period in the UK was held by Kabhi Alvida Na Kehna, which grossed nearly £750,000 and also starred Khan.
My Name is Khanhas also been a hit in the US, taking around $2.3m (£1.2m) during the four-day holiday weekend.
