It has been suggested that Desai abandoned Shunya because Ahuja was accused of raping his housemaid last year.
She admitted that she walked out on the project for personal reasons but did not reveal whether it was due to the allegations made against Ahuja.
"I have opted out of Shunya, and it's because of some personal reasons I don't wish to reveal," Desai said.
She also said that Adhyayan Suman had originally been offered the lead role but producer Pooja Bedi felt that Ahuja would be better for the part.
"It's true that the film was first offered to Adhyayan, but later on they decided to go ahead with Shiney," the actress added.
A source close to Desai said: "She comes from a very conservative background and doesn't want to be associated with Shiney. She reasoned that she wouldn't be comfortable working with him. She thought it would be a bad move for her to be cast opposite him."
