Speculation had been rife that Abhishek Bachchan would be playing his father's part instead, according to New Kerala.
A source told the site: "When the idea of remaking Agneepath came to producer Karan Johar, he right away locked in on Hrithik Roshan. It was a commitment to the actor, who is very keen to give his own interpretation to the character."
The original, directed by Johar's late father Yash, has been compared to Al Pacino's Scarface because of the dramatic downfall of the main character.
Johar has said the remake will pay tribute to Scarface but will get rid of some key roles from Agneepath, including that of Bachchan's sidekick Mithun Chakraborty.
