According to The Times of India, the 44-year-old star had initially planned a career in sport.
"I wanted to be a footballer, but I got injured, and because I had nothing to do in the evenings I started work on a play," he said.
Khan studied acting with noted theatre director Barry John, before securing his first television job in 1988 and debut film role in 1992.
"Suddenly my life's timetable changed, and I began doing theatre; then television came to India, so I did a TV series that did very well. After doing a degree in economics, I went to film school, then went to Mumbai for a year."
The actor played the part of an injured football player in Karan Johar's Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna.
