According to The Times of India, actresses such as Dia Mirza, Jacqueline Fernandez and Celina Jaitly are walking the ramp to supplement their income.
The stars are rumoured to be paid between Rs25,000 and 1 lakh (£346 to £1384) per show, or given free designer clothing for their services.
An industry source revealed: "Designers feel that having a Bollywood name gives them more limelight than they could get through their own collections.
"While some celebs charge money, dealings also happen in kind where the designer gifts his or her best outfit costing a few lakhs to the star thereby compensating non-payment of money."
The trend for Bollywood 'showstoppers' has increased since Madhur Bhandarkar's 2008 release Fashion.
