The producers were reportedly thinking of approaching Priyanka Chopra but the film’s Oscar-winning make-up artists Jenny Shircore and Greg Connam championed Kapoor for the role.
The pair are said to have suggested that Kapoor can look more like the former Indian prime minister with her strong jaw and deep eyes and director Krishna Shah has confirmed that this is an important part of the casting, says The Times of India.
Shah said: "Indira at 20 will take about an hour, at 50 about two hours while she at 67 will take three hours because of the advancement in the art of make-up."
The film, which Shah has confirmed will be multilingual, will be released in two parts. The first instalment will open in 2011, with part two released seven to eight months later.
