According to the Hindustan Times, the Board of Control for Cricket in India decided to remove Shetty's Rajasthan Royals and Zinta's King's XI, Punjab from the league on Sunday.
BCCI president Shashank Manohar explained that ownership violations led to the decision.
"In both these cases, the initial bid was made by one company, but the agreement with the IPL was entered into with another company," Manohar revealed.
Celebrity Big Brother winner Shetty, who own shares in the cricket team franchise with husband Raj Kundra, said that she was "shocked" by the news.
"Honestly too shocked to react, just disappointed," she posted on her Twitter account after the ruling.
