According to DNA, Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh extended the invitation to the star couple.
Actor and social activist Azmi confirmed the news on her Twitter page.
"Javed and I invited by the prime minister for dinner with Obama on 7th Nov (sic)," revealed the Honeymoon Travels star.
"USA full of doubts whether he will get a second term. I am pretty sure he will," added the actress, in reference to the current mid-term Congressional elections.
Outside of their work in Hindi film, Azmi and lyricist Akhtar are both actively involved in politics in India.
