Andy DeEmmony’s British comedy West is West opened the International Film Festival of India (IFFI) yesterday.

The sequel to the 1999 film East is East, starring Om Puri, Jimi Mistry (pictured) and Aqib Akhan, was selected as the opening film for the festival in Goa.

Speaking of its reception Ila Arun, who plays Basheera Khan in the film, said: "People have said that it is better than the earlier movie. Some say that it is as good as East is East. Nobody said that they were disappointed with the film at these festival screenings."

Set in 1975, West is West tells the story of a father worrying about his 15-year-old son losing his heritage and therefore packing him off to Pakistan to rediscover his roots.

West is West will be released on February 25.
