The film, which stars Irrfan Khan, Shabana Azmi and Soha Ali Khan, is due to start filming in Sri Lanka next month, according to the Hindustan Times.
"Because it is an ensemble cast dates were a problem, but the film will start shooting soon," a source told the paper.
The Booker Prize-winning novel tells the story of the events before and after the independence and partition of India.
