According to Hindustan Times, the only theatrical releases during the next four weeks will be from low-budget projects.
Speaking about the decision, trade analyst Taran Adarsh said: "No filmmaker would like to take the big risk since everyone is glued to cricket, especially since it's the World Cup that's taking place in India."
Actor and drama teacher Anupam Kher suggested however that the lack of major releases would benefit smaller films.
"Films have the capability to work at the box-office come rains or typhoons. Plus, cricket will be played the whole year," said the veteran star.
Kher will be seen in Yeh Faasley with model-turned actor Tena Desae on March 4.
