The two possible leads were chosen after Kareena Kapoor opted out because the film's plot was too close to her own life, Mumbai Mirror reports.
A source told the site: "Everything is okay. Both Aishwarya and Katrina are fine actresses. Both can do ample justice to the role, which requires a lot of style and character as well."
According to the paper, director Madhur Bhandarkar temporarily shelved the project when Kapoor decided against the role.
Rai and Kaif dated Khan for two years and a year respectively.
